A common method that conservationists use to capture birds is with a device called a mist net. The birds may be captured for a variety of reasons, including tagging them for tracking movement or health assessments. The mist net makes this much easier than attempting to do it by hand. A mist net is a very fine net strung between two poles. The net is fine enough that birds cannot see it, so they fly into it and then are captured. This post will explain the process of setting one of these nets up. Note that using mist nets requires certification, so do not just set one up without consulting local wildlife authorities.

Step 1: Pick a location to set the net

The first step is to figure out where the net should be placed. The net should be placed in a spot where the birds either congregate or fly through regularly. If the birds congregate in a structure, place the net so that it covers the primary exit point. Otherwise, you can string the net between trees or in other areas where the birds frequently fly.

Step 2: Deploy the net

Once you have determined where to place the net, the next step is to actually deploy it. Remove the net from the bag or container it is in and unroll it (you will need more than one person to do this if it is a large net). It is important that you do not let the net touch the ground while setting it up, as leaves and other debris increase the visibility of the net and will decrease success. Place the poles into the ground after stretching the net tight and then anchor them with stakes or ropes. Be sure to brace the poles against a surface to decrease the risk of the net falling.

Step 3: Remove the birds from the net after capture

After the net is deployed, birds might fly into the net. When the birds fly into the net, they will tangle themselves and fall into the built-in capture pocket. Carefully remove the bird from this pocket and then perform the action you deployed the net for.
